Living in the land of ¨No se hace¨ (It is just not done)

2008
I walk into a bar/cafe. The entire wall is covered with a menu for bocadillos (big sandwiches on baguette). I know what I want and approach the counter.

Me: Can I have a chicken sandwich with vegetables?

SIDE NOTE: Here in Spain vegetables are not widely used, nor are they usually served with sandwiches. The ones I am referring to in the above question are lettuce and tomato.

Lady: No.

Me: What? I just want a chicken sandwich with a little lettuce and tomato.

Lady: It is just not done.

Me: Well how about if I pay you extra for them.

Lady: No, you can either order the chicken sandwich, or the vegetable sandwich.

SIDE NOTE: A vegetable sandwich in Spain is typically, lettuce, tomato, mayo, hard-boiled egg and more mayo.

Me: I don´t want two sandwiches, it is just for me.

The lady goes and asks somebody else, then comes back.

Lady: It is just not done.

At this point the person I assume to be in charge, hears the lady is agitated with me and comes over.

Guy: What do you want?

I start from the beginning and tell him my request. By now I have been having this conversation for about 10 minutes.

Guy: It is just not done.

Me: Okay, how about if I pay you for two sandwiches and then you just put all the ingredients on one bread.

Guy. It is just not done.

One widely recognized pastime in Spain is watching other people 1) work and 2) have arguments. At this point the whole bar was looking my way.

Me: Okay, thank you.

No sandwich. It is just too slippery of a slope.

You were probably better off without that abomination of the bocadillo. 🙂
    Happy belated birthday to Esther!!

Life is too funny! Don’t you love that feeling — that if you just explain one more time, surely someone will have an Aha! moment and find you perfectly, logically, clever? But NOPE! And not even a sandwich to show for your trouble. 🙂 Hilarious!
